about

Billy Wayne Goodwin Jr., who wrote this song, used to claim that this song was the “greatest rock n roll song ever written.” He passed away in 2017, and the only recording is a brilliant but lo-fi demo made almost 20 years ago. That recording provides the sample of Billy Wayne counting in Afton’s recording. Though the lyrics are ethereal and suggestive, according to the author, the song is about sexual exhibitionism in a graveyard with a “goth chick.” Afton channeled Billy Wayne in the studio and the result was a Greg Dulli/Mark Lanegan-esque production that smells like a Melvins T-Shirt after a show at a smoking dive bar that pays the band in Natural Light. Nashville rock legend and former bandmate of Billy Wayne Wess Floyd joins Afton on electric guitar, while Daniel Seymour (bass) and Tommy Stangroom (drums) provide the oversized rhythm section. The track is probably the biggest genre diversion on Kings for Sale, but it was necessary to include the Greatest Rock n Roll Song Ever Written to achieve the ambitious project that is Kings for Sale.

lyrics

I can’t shake you and your
Cemetery Blues.
I tried to sleep but you’re eating me alive.
I can’t miss you.
Don’t miss me.
It’s hard to leave when you can’t be seen.
I’d be alright if I could sleep through the night,
and not wake up to tell you
I’d be ok if I could walk through the day.
I’d be just fine if I could keep you alive.
